Greenhouse growing in August

In August, a greenhouse offers plenty of opportunities to extend the growing season and start cool weather crops. You can plant or sow seeds for winter salads, herbs, and some vegetables like spinach, kale, and lettuce. It’s also a good time to harvest summer crops and make the most out of your produce. With warm summer evenings still a plenty, dressed salads are the perfect evening meal.

In August, you can plant things like leafy greens; micro greens and salad greens, and even winter potatoes in your greenhouse. The greenhouse conditions are ideal for these types of crops as the weather starts to cool down.

It’s also a great time to refresh and rejuvenate the soil. You can add some compost or well-rotted manure to enrich it. Plus it’s also a good idea to check the PH and make sure everything is balanced. And of course, do not forget to keep it watered, drained and aerated!

This close-up image captures a woman tending to plants inside a bright wooden-framed greenhouse or sunroom.

The woman, seen in profile from the torso up, is wearing a simple gray t-shirt. Her blonde hair is pulled back, and she is focused on her task. She is extending her right arm upwards, holding a dark blue metal watering can by its handle. The watering can is currently hanging from a hook on a chain suspended from the ceiling structure.

The structure of the space features light-toned wooden framing and translucent roof panels, allowing a large amount of bright, diffused sunlight to enter. A black arm mechanism for opening a roof vent is visible near the top.

The greenhouse is filled with various plants and gardening elements. In the middle ground, there is a wooden shelf holding several terracotta pots containing pink-flowering plants (likely Kalanchoe). To the right, a large, leafy green hanging plant cascades down, and several more potted plants, including some with pink flowers and herbs, are arranged in the foreground and on the floor. A white plaster bust or statue is partially visible on the shelf, adding a decorative element. The image conveys a sense of peaceful gardening and care within a sunlit, dedicated growing space.

August Planting & Sowing

Spinach is a great plant to grow within your greenhouse in August as these plants take about 8 weeks to mature. Spinach favours the warm, sunny conditions of our greenhouses in August, so it is a great plant to grow in late summer. Radishes will also do well.

August is a great time to start planting your winter, or Christmas, potatoes. Cold stored potato tubers can be planted directly into large containers inside your greenhouse. Do ensure that your container is at least 1ft in depth and width. Winter potatoes need to be adequately spaced out when planting, so make sure that you plant your tubers with spacings of around 8-10 inches. Therefore providing your potatoes enough room to form properly. Once planted it is vital that you keep your potatoes watered well, keeping the soil consistently moist. Broad beans and garlic will also start well now and be ready for a winter harvest.

August Harvest

If you have crops ready to harvest such as peppers, tomatoes and herbs, then make the most of these in your cooking. Again these are such wonderful ingredients in salads and side dishes. August certainly feels like a time of transition, harvesting and sowing old and new crops. Reaping the benefits of your hard work earlier in the year. There is no need to worry about the heat in August with a Yardistry greenhouse. A heat-sensitive, automatic roof vent opener allows the Greenhouse to maintain optimum temperature and humidity levels.  A louvered base wall vent enables proper air intake.

This image features a charming, small-scale wooden greenhouse situated in an outdoor setting, likely a backyard or garden area.

The structure has a classic pitched roof design, similar to a small house or shed. The frame is constructed from light-toned, natural wood, giving it an attractive, rustic appearance. The bottom half of the walls consists of solid wood paneling, while the upper sections and the roof are made with transparent or translucent panels, likely polycarbonate or glass, to allow sunlight in.

The front face of the greenhouse includes a single, wood-framed door with a black handle and latch. The roof has a vent window that is propped open, suggesting ventilation is important for the plants inside. Through the transparent panels, a few green plants can be faintly seen growing inside.

The greenhouse is placed on a level, paved or gravel surface. In the immediate background, a neatly trimmed, vibrant green hedge forms a strong, continuous border. Beyond the hedge, taller trees and bushes with darker green foliage are visible under a bright, partly cloudy blue sky, completing the classic garden scene. The overall look is functional and aesthetically pleasing, designed for personal gardening use.
