Gazebo Roofing Materials – which is better and why?

The aluminium roof for our Meridian Gazebo range has been chosen for durability, practicality and aesthetic quality. Aluminium is strong, stable and perfect for our changing British climate. It holds up well against sun, rain, and humidity.  Not only does our roof offer waterproofing, it also is very effective at heat dispersion. A great year round result.

Yardistry aluminium roofing sets us apart from our competitors. An Aluminium roof is known for being lightweight and easy to install. Therefore making them a practical choice for our gazebo designs.  The Aluminium roof is not only visually appealing with a contemporary feel, but also provides reliable protection against the elements.  Ultimately ensuring your outdoor gatherings can continue regardless of the weather.

This close-up image focuses on a section of a wooden outdoor gazebo or pavilion and the comfortable lounge area underneath it. The perspective is slightly elevated, looking down onto the seating area. The gazebo structure features thick, light-toned natural wood posts and angled support beams. The wood has a clean, finished look, highlighting its construction. The roof is a dark, matte brown, corrugated metal hard-top, providing substantial shade and protection. Large bolt heads are visible where the wooden beams are connected, emphasizing the sturdy, heavy-timber construction.Beneath the structure, a plush outdoor sectional sofa is visible. The sofa has a woven dark brown or gray rattan base and thick, light beige or cream-colored cushions, suggesting a high level of comfort. The seating area is arranged around a low table, upon which wine glasses, a small white serving dish, and a colorful bouquet of flowers or fruit are placed, suggesting the space is ready for entertaining. In the foreground and lower left, a vibrant green fern and some other plantings add a touch of natural color. The setting includes stone steps leading up to an adjacent patio area in the background, adding texture and levels to the overall backyard landscape design. The scene conveys a sense of modern, comfortable outdoor living and quality craftsmanship.

What about a steel roof?

Unlike steel, aluminium naturally resists rust and corrosion. Therefore making it a low-maintenance option for outdoor use. Steel roof gazebos can be very heavy and quite noisy when it rains. Galvanising and powder coating steel can offer corrosion resistance. However, minor damage to the coating can expose the steel to rust and cause problems.

What about Asphalt Shingles?

Asphalt shingles are another roofing option for garden gazebos. They are made from a fibre glass mat base that is coated with asphalt and covered with ceramic granules. They are not as environmentally friendly as other roofing materials. But they do come in a wide variety of colours, so you can choose one that complements your garden’s look. Whilst they are a durable cheaper option, they can be more prone to damage than other roofing materials if something heavy, like a branch or hail, falls on them.

This close-up image focuses on the upper structure of a wooden outdoor gazebo or pavilion set against a bright, sunny day.The most prominent feature is the hard-top roof, which is made of dark, matte brown corrugated metal panels. The roof has a sloped, peaked design, with visible seams and fasteners running along the ridges, showcasing its robust, weather-resistant construction.Beneath the roof, the support frame is made of thick, light-toned natural wood beams and posts, likely cedar or pine, with a clean finish. The heavy-duty construction is highlighted by the visible circular metal bolt covers or decorative fasteners securing the beams. A large, angled wooden brace provides lateral support between the horizontal beam and the vertical post.In the lower portion of the image, the interior of the gazebo is partially visible. A dark-colored outdoor table and a woven rattan chair back are seen beneath the shade. A glass of water sits on the table, indicating the space is in use.The background shows a well-maintained outdoor setting under a clear blue sky with a few wispy white clouds. The structure is set next to a vibrant green lawn and some garden beds with green foliage and shrubbery. The image effectively conveys the quality materials and sturdy design of the outdoor shelter, positioned in a sunny, green backyard environment.

So what makes Aluminium so good?

  • Lightweight: It is lighter in weight, so easier to transport, handle, and install, which is ideal for DIY projects like our build at home garden gazebo sets.
  • Heat Dissipation: Aluminium is an excellent thermal conductor, meaning it quickly disperses heat. This can keep the area under the roof much cooler in summer.  Aluminium roofing can reflect solar radiation, which helps to reduce heat gain and keep the structure cooler in hot weather. Aluminium’s high thermal conductivity means that heat is spread around aluminium roof panels quickly, allowing more opportunity to cool than steel does.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Aluminium is a recyclable material. This is so important to us as a company. Aluminium is a sustainable choice for roofing.
  • Aesthetically Pleasing: Aluminium roofs offer a contemporary and stylish appearance that will complement the design of your garden.
This image captures the construction or assembly phase of an outdoor structure, specifically showing two large, triangular roof panels resting on the ground in a backyard. The panels are likely components for a gazebo or pavilion roof. The primary focus is the foreground panel, which is made of dark, shiny brown corrugated metal sheeting. This panel is large and triangular, consistent with a hip or pitched roof design, and is constructed on a visible frame of light-colored wood planks. The corrugation runs across the width of the panel. Below this main panel, two more identical, stacked panels are partially visible, indicating they are pre-assembled components ready for installation. The panels are sitting on an area of exposed, dark soil, suggesting that a new lawn or patio is being prepped around the construction site. In the middle ground, there is a clear border between the soil and a landscaped bed, marked by a line of dark paving stones or bricks. This bed is covered in light-colored gravel and holds several large planters: three terracotta-colored, bulbous pots and three tall, black, square planters, all containing various shrubs and small trees.A dense, neatly trimmed hedge and other greenery form the backdrop, separating the yard from the outside. The scene illustrates an active, organized backyard improvement project under bright sunlight.
