Greenhouse growing in August

In August, a greenhouse offers plenty of opportunities to extend the growing season and start cool weather crops. You can plant or sow seeds for winter salads, herbs, and some vegetables like spinach, kale, and lettuce. It’s also a good time to harvest summer crops and make the most out of your produce. With warm summer evenings still a plenty, dressed salads are the perfect evening meal.

In August, you can plant things like leafy greens; micro greens and salad greens, and even winter potatoes in your greenhouse. The greenhouse conditions are ideal for these types of crops as the weather starts to cool down.

It’s also a great time to refresh and rejuvenate the soil. You can add some compost or well-rotted manure to enrich it. Plus it’s also a good idea to check the PH and make sure everything is balanced. And of course, do not forget to keep it watered, drained and aerated!

August Planting & Sowing

Spinach is a great plant to grow within your greenhouse in August as these plants take about 8 weeks to mature. Spinach favours the warm, sunny conditions of our greenhouses in August, so it is a great plant to grow in late summer. Radishes will also do well.

August is a great time to start planting your winter, or Christmas, potatoes. Cold stored potato tubers can be planted directly into large containers inside your greenhouse. Do ensure that your container is at least 1ft in depth and width. Winter potatoes need to be adequately spaced out when planting, so make sure that you plant your tubers with spacings of around 8-10 inches. Therefore providing your potatoes enough room to form properly. Once planted it is vital that you keep your potatoes watered well, keeping the soil consistently moist. Broad beans and garlic will also start well now and be ready for a winter harvest.

August Harvest

If you have crops ready to harvest such as peppers, tomatoes and herbs, then make the most of these in your cooking. Again these are such wonderful ingredients in salads and side dishes. August certainly feels like a time of transition, harvesting and sowing old and new crops. Reaping the benefits of your hard work earlier in the year.
